HYDRASTIDACEAE
The family comprises 2 species belonging to the genus Hydrastis Ellis ex L. One species is found in Japan, and another in eastern North America. Some authorities now regard these plants as belonging to the Ranunculaceae. [Summary yet to be added] At one time, this plant grew wild in the woods of eastern North America but its medicinal use as a "tonic" led almost to extermination from ruthless collection of the rhizomes. The plant may also be found in cultivation. Schwarz et al. (1957) list the plant as an irritant but give no clinical or other details. References |
